Spread of FMD

Although FMD has reared its ugly head over the centuries, it re-introduced itself in February of 2000 in the United Kingdom. Its impact has been devastating, with over 1,800 confirmed cases as of June 30, 2001. The government has elected to slaughter cattle in preference to vaccinating them.

South America has also been affected by FMD. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay have practiced vaccination to combat the disease. The use of vaccine is likely to exclude these countries from the Asian markets for about four years until they can achieve FMD freedom without the use of vaccination. However, many countries such as Europe, Canada, the United States and Mexico accept meat from animals that have been vaccinated.
